2005 TOURNAMENT NEWS

Dates Set for the Inaugural Carlton Woods Invitational
THE WOODLANDS, TX (November 15, 2005)--The Club at Carlton Woods has announced the creation of the Carlton Woods Invitational, a competitive amateur tournament that aims to attract an elite field of mid-amateurs and seniors. The tournament dates have been set for May 24-26, 2006, with a practice round scheduled for May 23.

The Carlton Woods Invitational will be a 54-hole stroke play event held on both the Nicklaus and Fazio Courses at The Club at Carlton Woods. The field will be comprised of a Mid-Amateur Division and a Senior Division. Round One will be played on the Nicklaus Course, Round Two will be played on the Fazio Course, and the Final Round will be played on the Nicklaus Course. The field will be cut to the low 50% and ties after Round Two, with the remainder competing in a Consolation Event on the Nicklaus Course.

The club’s stated goal is to develop the Carlton Woods Invitational into one of the most prestigious events in amateur golf, while providing an unparalleled experience to its competitors. “We want to give our players a pure, traditional golf experience”, said Mark Steinbauer, Director of Golf at The Club at Carlton Woods. “We intend to make this tournament the finest of its kind in the U.S., a very prestigious tournament to win.”

In keeping with the philosophy of the club, an array of social activities has been incorporated into the tournament schedule. Beginning with the practice day, each daily golf event will be followed by cocktails and dinner finishing with a luncheon and awards presentation after the completion of the Final Round. The official tournament dinner featuring a keynote speaker will be held the evening after Round One.

In just five years of operation, The Club at Carlton Woods has quickly established itself as a preeminent championship venue. The club has hosted USGA Open and Mid-Amateur qualifying, the 2004 Texas State Amateur, and will host the 2007 USGA State Team Championships. The Nicklaus Course has garnered a host of state and national awards, and with the recent opening of the Fazio Course, The Club at Carlton Woods became the first private club in America with Nicklaus and Fazio designs.

Carlton Woods to Host 2007 USGA State Team Championships
FAR HILLS, NJ (November 9, 2005) -- The United States Golf Association has selected The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, to host the 2007 U.S. State Team Championships. The championships will be played from September 18-20.

The Club at Carlton Woods has quickly gained the reputation of one of the finest tournament venues in the state, having already hosted U.S. Open Local Qualifying in 2002 and 2003, U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying in 2004, and the Texas State Amateur (won by Zach Atkinson) in 2004.

Carlton Woods has two championship courses, the first designed by Jack Nicklaus in 2001, and a newly-opened Tom Fazio course.

"The Club at Carlton Woods is very excited about the opportunity to host such an event," said Mark Steinbauer, director of golf. "We are already starting the process to prepare to show everyone golf Texas style."

The team championships are the youngest of the USGA events, first introduced in 1995 and held on an every-other-year basis since. Each state is invited to submit a team entry of three players, with the top two scores counting toward the team total for each of the three days.

In 2005, 52 men’s teams (including squads from Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia) competed for the trophy named in honor of former USGA President James Hand. Fifty women’s teams competed for the trophy named for past USGA President Judy Bell. That event, held at Berkeley Hall in Bluffton, SC, saw Texas capture the men's championship for the second time, while Georgia won the women's championship, with Texas finishing third.
